Ms. Alberta Jean Reed is a native of Toledo, Ohio and the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Albert L. Reed. She graduated from St. Ursula Academy and then, went on to The University of Michigan to obtain a Bachelor of Music, and finally, a Master of Music from Bowling Green State University with both degrees in the area of Voice Performance. While at BGSU, her Master’s thesis was entitled, “The Use of the Call and Response Technique as Employed during the Slavery Era.”
Ms. Reed enjoys teaching students privately, and has had a voice studio of more than 30 students while residing in the Michigan area. Currently, she teaches at Forte School of Music, and hosts open master classes to coach vocal students on the art of auditioning.
During the summer of 1995, Ms. Reed traveled to Cortona, Italy where she studied and performed with the Studio Lirico program sponsored by the University of South Carolina.
Alberta Jean has achieved many accolades for her vocal ability, including Finalist in the West Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition in 1998, Finalist in the Middle Tennessee Choral Society’s Orpheus Vocal Competition in 1999, and being named the International Grand Prize Winner of the Leontyne Price Vocal Arts Competitions in 1999. Subsequently, she performed a debut recital at Carnegie Hall in New York City to a standing ovation. Other recitals she has hosted include: A Celebration of Negro Spirituals, Songs of Love and Life, An Afternoon of Praise, as well as An Epiphany of Song, a yearly recital for her voice students.
Ms. Reed is a member of Christian Life Center Church in Ypsilanti, Michigan, where Rev. Henry J. Healey is the Pastor. In addition to her responsibilities as a professional Liturgy Cantor at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, she regularly worships with Warren AME Church, Kingdom Worship United Methodist Church, and Mount Pilgrim Church locally. |
